Locally Filmed Movies in Mendocino

Mendocino’s rugged coastline, historic architecture, and quaint village charm have made it a favorite backdrop for Hollywood productions for decades. Whether you’re a film buff or just curious about where your favorite scenes were shot, the region offers plenty of star-studded locations to explore.

  • East of Eden (1955)
Starring James Dean, Julie Harris, and Burl Ives, this adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel used numerous Mendocino landmarks including Mendocino Bay, Main Street, Crown Hall, Gallery Bookshop, Heeser Field, the Mendocino Art Center, and even the high school gym.
  • Overboard (1987)
This cult-classic romantic comedy with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell was filmed in and around both Mendocino and Fort Bragg, capturing the coastal setting in a playful light.
  • Murder, She Wrote (TV series, 1984–1996)
Though set in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, much of the filming took place in Mendocino. Angela Lansbury’s sleuthing was filmed across local landmarks including the Blair House Inn, Beacon Building, Mendocino Hotel, the Headlands, Firehouse, Savings Bank, and Hill House Inn.
  • Dying Young (1991)
Julia Roberts and Campbell Scott brought this dramatic romance to life using the stunning Mendocino Headlands as a centerpiece. A house was constructed (and later dismantled) just for the film. Additional scenes were shot at Mendocino High School.
  • Pontiac Moon (1994)
Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen filmed scenes at Lansing Street, Brewery Gulch Drive, Heeser and Main, and the Mendocino Rec Center—among other scenic town corners.
  • The Majestic (2001)
This nostalgic Jim Carrey drama includes scenes at Big River Beach, capturing the area’s coastal beauty in sweeping shots.
  • Racing with the Moon (1984)
Starring Sean Penn and Nicolas Cage, this coming-of-age film includes shots of the Mendocino Headlands, Mendosa Brothers’ Store, and the local Savings Bank.
